An Introduction to Combustion (Burning) Reactions
An Introduction to Combustion (Burning) Reactions A combustion reaction is a major class of chemical reactions, commonly referred to as burning. Combustion usually occurs when a hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. In the more general sense, combustion involves a reaction between any combustible material and an oxidizer to form an oxidized product. Combustion is an exothermic reaction, so it releases heat, but sometimes the reaction proceeds so slowly that a temperature change is not noticeable. Good signs that you are dealing with a combustion reaction include the presence of oxygen as a reactant and carbon dioxide, water, and heat as products. Inorganic combustion reactions might not form all of the products but are recognizable by the reaction of oxygen. Combustion doesnt always result in fire, but when it does, a flame is a characteristic indicator of the reaction. While the activation energy must be overcome to initiate combustion (i.e.:à using a lit match to light a fire), the heat from a flame may provide enough energy to make the reaction self-sustaining. General Form of a Combustion Reaction hydrocarbon oxygen ââ â carbon dioxide water Examples of Combustion Reactions Here are several examples of balanced equations for combustion reactions. Its important to remember that combustion reactions are easy to recognize because the products always contain carbon dioxide and water. In these examples, oxygen gas is present as a reactant, but trickier examples of the reaction exist where the oxygen comes from another reactant. combustion of methaneCH4(g) 2 O2(g) ââ â CO2(g) 2 H2O(g)burning of naphthaleneC10H8 12 O2 ââ â 10 CO2 4 H2Ocombustion of ethane2 C2H6 7 O2 ââ â 4 CO2 6 H2Ocombustion of butane (commonly found in lighters)2C4H10(g) 13O2(g) ââ â 8CO2(g) 10H2O(g)combustion of methanol (also known as wood alcohol)2CH3OH(g) 3O2(g) ââ â 2CO2(g) 4H2O(g)combustion of propane (used in gas grills and fireplaces)2C3H8(g) 7O2(g) ââ â 6CO2(g) 8H2O(g) Complete Versus Incomplete Combustion Combustion, like all chemical reactions, does not always proceed with 100% efficiency. It is prone to limiting reactants the same as other processes. So, there are two types of combustion you are likely to encounter: Complete Combustion - Also called clean combustion, clean combustion is oxidation of a hydrocarbon that produces only carbon dioxide and water. An example of clean combustion is burning of candle wax, where the heat from the wick vaporizes wax (a hydrocarbon), which reacts with oxygen in the air to release carbon dioxide and water. Ideally, all the wax burns so nothing remains once the candle is consumed. The water vapor and carbon dioxide dissipate into air.Incomplete Combustion - Also called dirty combustion, incomplete combustion is hydrocarbon oxidation that produces carbon monoxide and/or carbon (soot) in addition to carbon dioxide. An example of incomplete combustion would be burning coal, where a lot of soot and carbon monoxide is released. Many of the fossil fuels burn incompletely, releasing waste products.

Soccer Culture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Soccer Culture - Essay Example I asked my father to intervene and decide for us. It was when my father confirmed it as Soccer that I happened to learn that this was a world of wonders that I yet needed to explore. One question was constantly beeping in my mind, ââ¬Å"But why was it so non-existent in US?â⬠I consulted several sources to find the answer and was lucky enough to gather bits which when assembled laid a comprehensive answer in front of me. I would answer that question in this paper, but first, I want to share some general information about the Soccer culture that I happened to find in the way of searching my questionââ¬â¢s answer. One of the most played sports in the world is Soccer. If we track its history, this sport has always had a unique culture that has inspired the civilized world. When we talk about the culture of Soccer, it includes various successful events, rumors and articles in the life of the sport, controversies that the sport has remained subjected to form time to time as well as its political, economical and sociological impacts on the world in general and individual nations in particular. Soccer is a very well known sport and is played almost everywhere. Some people confuse Soccer with Football, though the two games are considerably different in concept, rules and techniques. Soccer fans are divided into derbies (Mercado). These are essentially contests between competitors who are emotionally supported by their fans. This is what makes this sport feel more like a battle with various political and socioeconomic influences on the competing nations than a game. Also, the news and articles that discuss Soccer matches commonly orient their discussion around the rivalry between competitors. Soccer match is considered worth betting on and millions of people loose and earn millions of dollar in a matter of only moments. Likewise, the soccer clubs differ from each other in order to accord with old traditions. Their differences are based on various socioeconomic and political traits of old traditions. The rivals conventionally base their aggression on various disturbing events of the past and also, the political and cultural differences between them. There is also a big industry in the name pf Soccer that manufactures such things as banners, scarves and hats. These products are conventionally made with meaningful and team specific symbols on them so that use of these products would speak of the consumerââ¬â¢s favor for particular teams. Famous players give autographs on the balls to make them precious souvenirs, which promote the culture of Soccer. Owing to its voluminous popularity, many Soccer leagues have been established in different countries across the globe. Prominent clubs and team cultures are encouraged in festivals, literature and crafts. Soccer has always served to unite the divided world. This is evident from the fact that British soldiers played Soccer with indigenous people of Iraq and Afghanistan just like they had done d uring the 1st World War on the Christmas Day in 1914 (NPR). However, US has never made similar use of Soccer. The primary reason behind this is that a nationââ¬â¢s culture reflects in its ports. As a result of my study, I discovered that Soccer had originated in Europe. Around the mid 19th century, it was fashioned in UK from where it spread far and wide (NPR). However, the European nations have had a strong influence on it. If there is something that best represents the gap between the American and European norms, it is the differences betwe

The Firms Expansion Strategies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1
The Firms Expansion Strategies - Essay Example The market expansion strategy though initially appeared like need to flex its financial muscle against its rivals but after an examination revealed critically and affirmed my learning experience that these strategies are well-calculated strategic management initiatives aimed at enhancing the companyââ¬â¢s growth and development to expand beyond the overcrowded domestic domains. My knowledge of the companiesââ¬â¢ competitive advantage in terms of price discounting and efficient supply chain management assisted me to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of such terms that had previously only seemed theoretical and impractical. à The assignment therefore greatly enhanced my prior knowledge of diverse economic terms and models, thus ensuring there is more deeply entrenched in my mind. The assignment has, therefore, made me better comprehend the classroom learning to a more practical level. the research made me come to term with the real meaning of strategic management in regards to marketing strategies as well as being able to adequately read financial data to ascertain a companyââ¬â¢s performance indexes both in the short term (quarterly or annually) and long-term (five years). The study was, therefore, a veritable learning curve for me.

Latinos Illegal Immigration Essay Example for Free
Latinos Illegal Immigration Essay ââ¬Å"The contribution of immigrants can be seen in every aspect of our national life. We see it in religion, in politics, in business, in arts, in education, even in athletics and in entertainment. There is no part of our nation that has not been touch by our immigrantââ¬â¢s backgroundâ⬠As we all know, John F. Kennedy was passionate about emigrational issues, throughout his presidency. He always said that America is a nation of people with values and traditions. He believes everybody deserves the freedom to build better lives for themselves as well as for their family members in their adopted homeland. Throughout the years, numerous folks have immigrated from all around the world to the United States. Today, Latinos are the largest minority group in the United States. ââ¬Å"About 44 million Latinos have been officially tallied; another 9 million Latinos are living here illegally. â⬠The Latinos substantial Illegal immigration into the United State has provoked a mayor concern. There are many concerns about Latinos illegal immigration such as, the impact on the United States economy, as well as for their motherland, also the physical danger they have to experience on their journey, and the psychological sufferings they have to live with in order to live the American dream. To begin with, going back to the 1800ââ¬â¢s, before the Europeans immigrated into the United States, Latinos had already established settlements in New Mexico and Florida, And have contribute to the development of this country. According to the statistical abstract of the United States about 43 million people can trace back to their Hispanic origin. Even after all of the history of Latinos in America, U. S. officials begun to build a 670 miles-long-wall on the U. S. borders to control the illegal immigration. Despising protest from environmental groups and the Mexican government, the U. S. government continues work on keeping Latino illegal immigrant away from the U. S borders, but then again about 300,000 people elude detention and make it to the United States each year, and about million get arrested and return to their native land. Despite walls and border patrol official as long as there is poverty in third world countries, undocumented immigrant will continue to find a way to fight for the American dream. Then again ââ¬Å"what is the American dream? â⬠The American dream is to come to the United States and work hard. Their goal is not to get rich and make millions of dollar but instead all they want to do is to provide their families a better life style. Many travel the journey alone, because they know how dangerous and risky this experience can be. Some people try over and over if they were not successful the first time. Once they finally make it across; they live in the worst conditions and share their living space with 8 other people just to be able to save as much as they can so one day they can return to their motherland, and enjoy the fruit of their hard work with their loved ones. One of the biggest controversies about illegal immigration for many Americans is that if more illegal immigrant crossed the border, the jobs availability will decrease. That is understandable. Many Latinos that work in the United States work hard and have more than one job at the same time. The irony of all is that the jobs these illegal immigrants do are those ones no one wants to put their hands on, because either those jobs are difficult to do or because the pay is not enough. I do not think any of the protestants groups against Latinos illegal immigration have ever think that these people had never had the chance to go to school and educate themselves. Every American in this country had the privileged to get education. But instead there are many that chose not to take advantage of that. They rather live of welfare and social security. I do not know who is worst, us hypocrites citizens that are always trying to eat the smallest fish or these companionate people that all they care about is the wellbeing of the people they love. This type of egoism and greed is what has brought biggest empires down. Furthermore, another concern is that millions of dollars being send throughout Latino America without being tax. This concern affect us all, since must of the money from taxes is use to run public schools, hospitals, public transportation, etc. n my opinion, I agree with this concern, but in the other hand I am sure that if they were given a chance to contribute to the growth of this country; they will take care of their responsibilities. In addition to the effect of immigrants in the United states economy. I would like to talk about the physical and emotional impact of have to go through after they make the decision of fulfilling their American dreams. While doing this research I stumble upon a short article by James M. Henslin call ââ¬Å"The Illegal Travel Guideâ⬠this article explains the experience from a different point of view. Manuel was a drinking buddy of Jose, a man I had met in Colima, Mexico. At 45, Manuel was friendly, outgoing, and enterprising. Manuel, who had lived in the United States for seven years, spoke fluent English. Preferring to live in his hometown in Colima, where he palled around with his childhood friends, Manuel always seemed to have money and free time. When Manuel invited me to go on a business trip with him, I accepted. I never could figure out what he did for a living or how he could afford a car, a luxury that none of his friends had. As we traveled from one remote village to another, Manuel would sell used clothing that he had heaped in the back of his older-model Ford station wagon. ? At one stop, Manuel took me into a dirt-floored, thatched-roof hut. While chickens ran in and out, Manuel whispered to a slender man who was about 23 years old. The poverty was overwhelming. Juan, as his name turned out to be, had a partial grade school education. He also had a wife, four hungry children under the age of 5, and two pigs his main food supply. Although eager to work, Juan had no job, for there was simply no work available in this remote village. As we were drinking a Coke, which seems to be the national beverage of Mexicos poor, Manuel exà plained to me that he was not only selling clothing he was also lining up migrants to the United States. For a fee, he would take a man to the border and inà troduce him to a wolf, who would help him cross into the promised land. When I saw the hope in Juans face, I knew nothing would stop him. He was borrowing every cent he could from every friend and relative to scrape the money together. Although he risked losing everything if apprehended and he would be facing unknown risks, Juan would make the trip, for wealth beckoned on the other side. He knew people who had been to the United States and spoke glowingly of its opportunities. Manuel, of course, the salesman he was, stoked the fires of hope. Looking up from the children playing on the dirt floor with chickens pecking about them, I saw a man who loved his family. In order to make the desperate bid for a better life, he would suffer an enforced absence, as well as the uncertainties of a foreign culture whose language he did not know. Juan opened his billfold, took something out, and slowly handed it to me. I looked at it curiously. I felt tears as I saw the tenderness with which he handled this piece of paper. It was his passport to the land of opportunity: A social security card made with his name, sent by a friend who had already made the trip and who was waiting for Juan on the other side of the border. It was then that I realized that the thousands of Manuels scurrying about Mexico and the millions of Juans they are transporting can never be stopped, for only the United States can fulfill their dreams of a better life. Henslin, The Illegal Travel Guide) ? In conclusion, I believe that the illegal immigration to the United States makes a big impact on our countryââ¬â¢s economy and Latino Americaââ¬â¢s. Nevertheless, I cannot even imaging how hard is for this people to make a life changing decision without any warranty. Crossing the borders is not easy. Many people have lost their live trying; many others are still traumatized about their journey, some have vanished in desert; their family members never heard from ever again. The psychological impact for these individuals is almost insufferable. Even knowing what the consequences might be, they leave everything behind and spend every penny they have to travel to the United States, just to offer their families a better life style. They believe this is the country of freedom, progress and opportunity, just what our founding fathers stood for. A society of immigrants, each of whom had begun life anew, on an equal footing. This is the secret of America: a nation of people with the fresh memory of old traditions who dare to explore new frontiers. ââ¬Å"(Kennedy)

Aspects of Life in Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and Trifles Essay
Aspects of Life in Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and Trifles In William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the protagonist, Hamlet, has arrived ââ¬Å"from his university studies to find Claudius, his uncle, ruling Denmark and married to his mother, Gertrude. Her remarriage within two months of his fatherââ¬â¢s death has left Hamlet disillusioned, confused, and suspicious about Claudiusâ⬠(DiYanni 1394). These types of crimes do not only happen in a personââ¬â¢s imagination, or in a made-up play, but also in our society today. Our society is just as immoral as Claudius and Gertrude. On the other hand, in Susan Gaspellââ¬â¢s contemporary play, Trifles, women are strong in character, protective of one another, and in charge of the situation, unlike Gertrude. Therefore, both Shakespeare and Gaspell have similar aspects of portrayal of the role of women, murder, and loyalty; and different aspects such as incest, suicide, and revenge. First, in the play, Hamlet, the males are depicted as dominant, strong, and rational; and the females are portrayed by opposing traits such as passive, accepting, hesitant, frail, and emotional. For instance, Hamlet referring to his mother as ââ¬Å"Frailty, thy name is woman!â⬠(I.ii.146) means that women are images of weakness, that women are weak-minded, easily led, and have no strength of character. To Hamlet, his mother's action of remarrying so quickly after her husbandââ¬â¢s death to her brother-in-law, is a proof of her frailty. In todayââ¬â¢s society, people also marry within the family thinking that there is nothing wrong with this scenario. However, this aspect discussed in the play cause great controversy because many people think that as long as there is love it does not matter who a person marries... ...h ed. Oscar Wildeââ¬â¢s the Importance of Escape Essay
Oscar Wildeââ¬â¢s play entitled ââ¬Å"The Importance of Being Earnestâ⬠illustrates the concept of dual personality, fantasy, love, and lies. Jack, Algernon, Gwendolyn, and Cecily all live in lies. They are manipulated by their fantasies and desire for perfect relationship and love. Jack, the protagonist in the play, is the root of lies because of his imaginary brother named Earnest. Algernon uses the name to win Cecily, while Gwendolyn and Cecily are both fascinated by this name because it expresses strength and perfection of manhood. Due to their search and desire to have Earnest, the male and female characters escape from the reality. Therefore, Wilde in The Importance of Being Earnest portrays a gender doubled theme of escape as the male characters escape through alter-egos and female characters privately through their imaginations. Jack escapes from reality using his alter-ego to become free from his responsibilities and obligations. In the first part of the play, readers learn that Jack is placed in a complex situation: ââ¬Å"When one is placed in the position of guardian, one has to adopt a very high moral tone on all subjectsâ⬠¦ a high moral tone can hardly be said to conduce very much to either oneââ¬â¢s health or oneââ¬â¢s happiness, in order to get up to town I have always pretended to have a younger brother of the name of Ernest, who lives in the Albany, and gets into the most dreadful scrapesâ⬠(Act I). Jack escapes from his country and changes his identity to Earnest to perform the things that he wants to experience. For Jack, being a guardian and a landowner is a great obligation for his ward and people. Through his alter-ego, Jack obtains freedom because he becomes the opposite of his real selfââ¬âthe liberated and careless individual that he could not demonstrate in reality. Aside from Jack, Gwendolyn also escapes from her real world, through her imagination, to find her true love. When she learns that Jackââ¬â¢s name is Earnest, she immediately confessed to him: ââ¬Å"For me you have always had an irresistible fascination. Even before I met you I was far from indifferent to you. We live, as I hope you know, Mr. Worthing, in an age of ideals. And my ideal has always been to love some one of the name of Ernest. The moment Algernon first mentioned to me that he had a friend called Ernest, I knew I was destined to love youâ⬠(Act I). Gwendolyn escapes from the reality to find her match. Searching for his Earnest gives her the opportunity to exit from reality and explore the world of fantasy. She believes that marrying a man with the name of Earnest can give her all her physical, emotional, and economic desires. As she walks into her fantasies, she tends to escape from the realityââ¬âfrom the fact that there is no perfect man. Similarly, Cecily uses her diary to escape from the reality and dreams for her Earnest. When she talks to Algernon, whom she knows as Earnest Worthing, Cecily excitedly revealed: ââ¬Å"You see, it [her diary] is simply a very young girlââ¬â¢s record of her own thoughts and impressions, and consequently meant for publication. When it appears in volume form I hope you will order a copy. But pray, Ernest, donââ¬â¢t stop. I delight in taking down from dictation. I have reached ââ¬Ëabsolute perfectionââ¬â¢. You can go on. I am quite ready for moreâ⬠(Act I). If Gwendolyn uses her imaginations, Cecily is using her diary as her gateway to fantasy. She illustrates her engagement with Earnest in her diary. It means that beyond the boundaries of reality and existence, Cecily found her Earnest, which she claims in her diary. Therefore, Cecily escape from reality and obtainment of her fantasy is part of her comfort zone. It makes her happy, complete, and loved. In conclusion, Jack, Gwendolyn, and Cecily all escape from reality because they want to be free and be loved. Jack uses his alter-ego to detach his self from his moral obligations and obtain liberty without limitations and fears. Meanwhile, Cecily and Gwendolyn escape from reality because they want to experience love. They try to find their own Earnest that will complete their beingââ¬âand through their fantasies, they are able to explore the idyllic and fearless relationship with the man that they desire.

Libertarian Paternalism, An Ideology By Sunstein And Thaler
Libertarian paternalism, a mix of libertarianism and paternalism, is an ideology by Sunstein and Thaler. It holds that humans should have free will and should be able to have the freedom to decide what to do with their own body and life, but with some government interference. This ideology does not take away any choices but it does basically manipulate people into making choices that are good for them; therefore a libertarian paternalist would agree with the decriminalization of drugs and prostitution but would nudge people away from it. Libertarianism is the belief that someone s liberty should not be restricted even if it is for their own good. Libertarians would agree with the legalization of drugs and prostitution even though they may harm people. The opposing view of libertarianism is paternalism which is the belief that it is justified to restrict someoneââ¬â¢s liberty for their own good. Gerald Dworkin (1968), a pro-paternalistic philosopher, believes that coercing someone to do something is ââ¬Å"justified by the reasons referring exclusively to the welfare, good, happiness, needs, interests or values of the person being coercedâ⬠(p. 108). This is pure paternalism. On the other hand, impure paternalism is restricting the freedom of people who do not benefit from it, such as imposing laws that regulate the sale of cigarettes. Paternalism does not allow for the legalization of drugs or prostitution. In this paper, I will argue that the state may legitimately interfere with our
